Columbia Finalizes Competition at the UVA Fall Classic

Lions put on a strong performance against ranked opponents in Charlottesville.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Members of the Columbia men's tennis team competed at the University of Virginia Orange & Blue Fall Classic, at the Snyder Tennis Center, this weekend. Competition began Friday morning and ceased Sunday afternoon.

The Lions competed against ACC Champion Virginia and contender Virginia Tech, as well as fellow Ivy League competitor Princeton. In 2021, Virginia ended its season ranked seventh in the ITA Individual Team Rankings.

Columbia travelled a highly talented, yet collegiately untested, selection of athletes including sophomores Roko Horvat, Alex Kotzen, Ishaan Ravichander, Henry Ruger, and Theo Winegar, freshmen Hugo Hashimoto, Jayden Templeman, and Max Westphal, plus junior Ben Gollin.

Playing from the top singles spot, Kotzen went 2-1 including a straight sets defeat of #101 Karl Poling (Princeton). Kotzen teamed up with Templeman, who also went 2-1 individually, to claim three consecutive victories in the doubles competition.

From the top doubles spot first-year Westphal, the 2021 Junior US Open Boys Doubles Champion, and Hashimoto, USTA Boys 16s Hard Court Doubles Champion, partnered to secure a pair of wins.

Gollin was a force in the singles competition, going a perfect 3-0 on the weekend behind a trio of two-set victories.

Overall, the Lions went 15-of-24 in singles matches and 7-of-10 in doubles.

A selection of Columbia players will return to competition from October, 2 – October, 10 in the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, OKLA. The week-long competition will take place at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
