Lions go for two in a row to start the 2021 campaign
NEW YORK — Following a season-opening victory on Friday, the Columbia men's soccer team (1-0-0) heads out to Long Island for its first road contest of the campaign. The Lions will visit Lavelle Stadium to take on Stony Brook (2-1-0) Monday with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. ET.
Columbia fans can watch the match live on ESPN+. Live stats will be provided by StonyBrookAthletics.com.
#1 | TRIUMPHANT RETURN
After a 657-day wait from its final match of 2019 to its first of 2021, the Columbia men's soccer team returned in style, defeating George Washington in front of the home crowd at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, 2-0, Friday afternoon. First-year Ryan Kipness and sophomore Jake Novoshelski both scored and assisted each other's goals. The match served as the collegiate debuts for both of the goal scorers. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Michael Collodi came up with three saves and the Columbia back line did its part to post the shutout. #2 | QUITE A FIRST IMPRESSION
First-year Ryan Kipness and sophomore Jake Novoshelski each scored in their collegiate debuts for the Lions on Friday. In doing so, they became the first Lions to score in a collegiate debut since Francisco Agrest put up his first tally in a 3-0 season-opening victory over Michigan at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium in 2014. On top of that, Kipness and Novoshelski assisted each other's goals, and are two of just four players in the Ivy League to score and assist a goal in the first game of the 2021 season -- the two others are Harvard's Cornelius Bencsik and Alessandro Arlotti.
#3 | NOVOSHELSKI IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Sophomore Jake Novoshelski was spotlighted by GoColumbiaLions.com freelance writer Matt Sugam following Friday's victory. The article, which highlights Novoshelski's performance and his long wait to make his collegiate debut, can be read on GoColumbiaLions.com. #4 | TRACKING DEBUTS
Seventeen of the 27 players on Columbia's roster are new to the program since 2019. Of those 17 players, 14 have never competed in a collegiate match. Below, we track which newcomers have made their Columbai debut to this point.
