Lions Fencing to Compete at Penn State Duals

Columbia to fence eight total dual matches against the likes of host Penn State, Duke, North Carolina, Penn, Yale, Temple (women), and Haverford (men).
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—The No. 2 ranked Columbia Fencing teams will resume their 2021-22 season with their first dual matches of the spring semester when the Lions compete Sunday at the eight-team Penn State Duals. The event will begin Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility. Admission for spectators is free.
Columbia is scheduled to fence six team dual matches against the likes of host Penn State, Temple (women only), Haverford (men only), Duke, North Carolina, and Ivy League rivals Penn, and Yale. It is the second time Columbia will compete at Penn State as the Lions opened their 2021-22 campaign at the Max Garret Penn State Open, Nov. 6-7.
Columbia enters the weekend with a combined 21-0 undefeated record as the women are 11-0 and men are 10-0.
Columbia's women's squad boasts three fencers who enter the weekend undefeated against dual match competition this year including foilists Zander Rhodes (21-0) and Rachel Zhang (13-0), along with sabreist Chloe Ghouin (17-0). Other fencers with 10 or more wins include Audrey Chu (19-5), Ariana Mangano (12-4), and Mina Yamanaka (13-2) in epee, Sylvie Binder (17-3), Delphine DeVore (14-2), and Vivian Zheng (15-2) in foil, and Nora Burke (13-3), Vera Kong (10-2), Megan Liang (11-1), and Daniella Timofeyev (14-1) in sabre.
Columbia men's fencers with 10 or more wins include Justin Haddad (11-5), Teddy Lombardo (13-3), and Alan Temiryaev (13-5) in epee, James Bourtis (11-4), Ashton Daniel (14-2), Sidarth Kumbla (13-3), Joon Paik (13-3), and Andrew Zheng (11-4) in foil, and Trenton Schmitt (10-8), Robert Vidovszky (15-3), and Christopher Walker (18-7) in sabre. Sabreists Josef Cohen and Jackson McBride are both an undefeated 9-0 on the year.
