Lions to Compete in ITA Kick-Off This Weekend

Lions will take on No. 7 ranked and host Pepperdine in Saturday’s first round, will meet either Notre Dame or Colorado in Sunday’s matchup.
MALIBU, Calif.—The Columbia women's tennis team will travel to Malibu, Calif. to compete in the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Pepperdine's Ralph Strauss Tennis Center. The Lions (2-0) will take on No. 7 ranked and No. 1 seeded Pepperdine (0-1) in the weekend's first match on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
Depending on Saturday's results, the Columbia will play either Notre Dame or Colorado on Sunday in either the Consolation Match at 10 a.m. or Championship at 1 p.m. The winner of the four-team weekend advances to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in Madison, Wis., from February 10-14.
All matches will be live-streamed via Playsight and can be found on PepperdineWaves.com at this link. Scores will be updated periodically on the web and on Twitter at @WavesTennis. Columbia is competing in the prestigious ITA Kick-Off Weekend event for the second consecutive season. In 2019-20, the Lions traveled to North Carolina.
Columbia opened its 2021-22 spring season with back-to-back dual match wins over LIU (6-1) and Sacred Heart (7-0) last Sunday at LifeTime Westchester. Jennifer Kerr and Michelle Xu lead the Lions with eight singles wins apiece, Rachele Rimondini has seven, and Akanksha Bhan, Shivani Amineni, Clarine Lerby, and Melissa Sakar each have won six matches. In doubles, Kerr and Amineni both have a team-high six victories, followed by Bhan/Anna Zhang, Sakar/Rimondini, and Sophia Strugnell/Carolyn Brodsky with three apiece.
Pepperdine opened its spring season with a 4-3 loss at home to No. 9 California. With the loss, the host Waves dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in the ITA national team rankings.
