Lions set team scoring record (265) in opening round
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Columbia's Nathan Han is now an NCAA record holder.
Carding 11 birdies, Han shot a bogey-free 11-under-par 60 on Saturday in the opening round of the Columbia Autumn Invitational. The tournament is being held at the Links Course of Lake Placid Club.
According to Golfweek, Han is one of 17 players in NCAA history to card a 60. The last came earlier this year when Auburn's Ryan Eshleman did so at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Another name on that prestigious list is Paul Casey, firing his 60 at the 1999 Pac-10 Championship. Han was on fire all day, starting his round with a birdie at the opening par-4, 416-yard first. He strung together three consecutive birdies at five, six and seven to make the turn in 5-under 30. He went on an absolute tear on the back nine, birdieing 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 to get to 11-under on his round. At the par-4 last, he hit his approach to about 20 feet, giving himself a chance to become the only golfer in NCAA history to card a 59. His putt for 59 broke just in front of the hole and settled near centimeters from the lip.
Han enters Sunday's final round with a one-shot lead over Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim after a second-round 1-under 70. The rest of the field is six shots back.
Highlighted by Han's record individual round, the Lions carded a program-record team score of 19-under-par 265 in the first round. Han, William Sung (67), Pat Healy (68) and Wyatt McGovern (70) were the four to combine for the score. Columbia's five competing in the team event combined for 31 birdies and an eagle. The Lions will enter Sunday in second place at 15-under after the first two rounds.
Fans can keep up with Sunday's final round on Golfstat. The field will go off in a shotgun format at 8:45 a.m.
