HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth's Eric Sachleben scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute and the Columbia men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the Ivy League season, 1-0, Saturday night at Burnham Field.
Dartmouth's goal came off a corner kick. After the ball was sent in and deflected to the far post, Garrett Socas played it back across the box. The ball went untouched inside the six to Sachleben, who tapped it in from right in front to give the Big Green a lead they would never relinquish.
Columbia had its opportunities and knocked on the door several times in the opening minutes of the second half. One of its best chances of the night came in that spell, when
Ryan Wallace sent a ball in through the air toward the far post. Dartmouth goalkeeper Costi Christodoulou attempted the catch but couldn't handle it. The ball fell to
Ryan Yang at the back post, but his header was kept out by a reactionary stop from Christodoulou.
The Lions were credited with five shots in the opening five minutes of the half and kept the pressure on all the way until the end. Dartmouth (5-5-3, 2-2-0 Ivy) made a stop on a deflected shot by Wallace in the final 10 minutes. Another attempt by
Alessandro Franciosa in the 85th minute missed high and right.
Despite the loss, Columbia outshot the Big Green, 11-7, taking 10 of those shots through a pressure-packed second half. The Lions added more pressure with eight corner kicks. Christodoulou earned four saves for the Big Green, while Columbia keeper Michael Collodi had three on seven total Dartmouth shots.
Columbia (1-6-5, 0-1-3 Ivy) will take on La Salle in a non-conference road match on Tuesday, before returning home to honor ts senior class next Saturday night when it hosts Yale (6-4-3, 1-3-0 Ivy). Kickoff from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
