PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
Saj McBurrows and
Kiara Robichaud combined for 29 kills as Columbia volleyball (4-14, 1-8) took on Brown (10-8, 6-3) in the first leg of a weekend road trip for the Lions. The Bears won the match 3-1.
McBurrows' performance came on a .444 attacking percentage, her second-best percentage on the season. Robichaud hit .314 with 14 kills.
Ruby van der Heide tallied 24 assists. The first-year now has 345 on the year, ranking seventh in Ivy League.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Columbia opened up a six-point lead midway through the first set, leading 16-10.
Eva Atkins recorded a kill on an assist from
Cadence Gronski, capping a 3-0 run. The Bears chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the set at 23. Brown was down 23-22 before scoring the final three points of the set.
The Lions led 8-4 in the second set then Brown scored five unanswered points. There were 11 led changes in the second set. Brown was up 23-22, but Columbia closed out the set with a 3-0 spurt, winning 25-23.
An 18-12 outburst for Brown created a tough hole for the Lions. The Bears were responsible for seven of the next eight points, winning the set 25-13.
Despite facing a four-point deficit early in the fourth set, Columbia bounced back to take a 9-7 lead. The Lions led by three points on three different occasions. With the set even at 21, Brown put together three straight points. Robichaud got her last kill of the night before Brown cemented the final score of the match. The Bears won 25-23.
