WHAT TO KNOW:
LAST TIME OUT
Columbia played Brown to a goalless draw in the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday night in New York. Senior goalkeeper Michael Collodi and the Columbia defense picked up their third shutout of the season and second in a row. Collodi made three stops on the night, while the attacking side threatened on multiple occasions but did not find the final touch to provide a breakthrough. The Lions are now 3-1-1 through their last five Ivy League openers and will travel to Harvard for their next league match on Saturday.
CLOSE CALLS
Seven of Columbia's eight games this season have been decided by a goal or less. Last year, 11 of Columbia's 16 matches came down to a single goal. Between the 2021 and 2022 seasons combined, 17 of the team's last 23 matches have been decided by the narrowest of margins. Earlier this season, the Lions earned a, 1-0, victory over St. John's at home, marking their first win in a one-goal affair since Oct. 29, 2019, when they defeated Fordham, 1-0.
DEFENSIVE STRONGHOLD
Columbia is one of the tougher teams to score in the nation. Entering Tuesday, Michael Collodi ranks No. 1 in the Ivy League and among the top 50 in the NCAA with three shutouts. His 28 total saves and .757 save percentage is good enough for second in the league. As a unit, Columbia boasts a .375 shutout percentage, good enough to rank among the top 30 percent of teams in the NCAA. In their last six matches, the Lions have allowed more than one goal on just one occasion and hold a goals-against-average of 0.833 in those matches.
THE SERIES
Columbia leads the all-time series against Hofstra, 16-5-4. The Lions dominated the series from 1959-2000, going an unbeaten 12-0-4 over that span. Columbia won three consecutive matches in 2004, '05 and '06, followed by a fourth straight match in 2018 by a score of 4-0. Hofstra has since won the last two contests, including a 3-1 decision last year out on Long Island.
