SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Michael Zheng, Max Westphal, and Theo Winegar of Columbia men's tennis are set to compete in the ITA Fall National Championships beginning on November 2 at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Zheng earned a spot in the Championships after winning the Northeast Super Regionals singles tournament hosted by Harvard last weekend. He came out on top out of 32 players, beating five opponents. Zheng defeated Harris Walker of Harvard by a score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the final match that lasted longer than two hours.
The first-year began the season ranked third in the ITA Division I Men's Freshman/Newcomer preseason rankings and also won the Wimbledon Junior Boys' Championship in July. Zheng looks to cap off the first half of an already impressive first-year campaign with a championship in Southern California. Zheng opens up Championships play against Geronimo Busleiman from Utah on November 2 at 1:30 p.m.
Joining Zheng on the cross-country trip is sophomore Max Westphal and junior Theo Winegar. The duo advanced to the final round of the doubles tournament at the Northeast Super Regionals last weekend. Westphal and Winegar went up against Edoardo Graziani and Kevin Zhu from Penn in the final, winning the first set 7-5. The pair from Penn won the second set 6-1 and then grabbed a 10-8 victory in the tiebreaker.
Westphal and Winegar began the year as the 21st ranked doubles team in Division I and gained an automatic bid into Super Regionals. The pair goes up against Brian Cernoch and Ryan Seggerman from the University of North Carolina in the first round on November 2 at 5:00 p.m.
