WHAT TO KNOW:
A CHANCE AT HISTORY
• The Lions have a chance to earn their first win over an AP Top 25 team in program history. Entering Sunday, Columbia is 0-11 all-time against ranked opponents. One of those losses came at Iowa State, 73-27, back in 2010. Melissa Shafer led the Lions in that game with 11 points. Anna Prins led the Cyclones with 14 off the bench. Sunday will mark Columbia's first game against an AP Top 10 team since facing then-No. 7 Mississippi State at the 2017 Cancun Challenge.
• Sunday will also mark Columbia's third all-time matchup against a Big 12 team. The last came in 2010 at Iowa State. The only other Big 12 matchup the Lions have played came on Dec. 29, 2006 in Honolulu at the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational. The Lions fell to Oklahoma State, 86-42.
HOMECOMING
• Sunday's game will be a homecoming for senior Sienna Durr. The Grinnell, Iowa native was a four-year basketball captain at nearby Grinnell High School. She led Grinnell to the state tournament her junior and senior seasons, including a runner-up finish as part of a 23-3 campaign in 2017-18. Durr went on to be named the 2018 Iowa Class 4A Player of the Year, totaling 1,561 career points, 733 rebounds, and 246 blocks in her four high school seasons, including a record 70 points during the 2018 Iowa State Basketball Tournament. Durr also won the 2017 Iowa State Championship in track & field in the long jump.
• Columbia is 3-0 on the road to start the season. Last year, the Lions went an incredible 12-1 in true road games to boast one of the top-five road records in the country. If you go back to the 2019-20 season, the Lions are 19-1 in their last 20 true road games. The only such loss over that span came last season at Princeton, 57-39.
SUCCESS AGAINST THE POWER CONFERENCES
• With a win over Seton Hall on Thursday, as well as wins over Clemson, Georgetown and Boston College last season, Columbia is 8-9 in its last 17 games against power-conference opponents (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, SEC, Pac 12). The 17-game span began in 2016 with an overtime win at home over Providence. The Lions then opened the 2017-18 season by defeating the Friars on the road, 73-64. The Lions earned their first ACC win in the 2017-18 season as well, when they defeated Boston College, 68-60, in front of a record 2,372 fans on Education Day. In 2019-20, they added to the tally with a 54-49 victory on Education Day over Georgetown (Dec. 6).
REDEMPTION
• Columbia earned some redemption on Thursday, defeating Seton Hall, 83-76, in South Orange, N.J. Kaitlyn Davis posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while all five Columbia starters finished in double figures. Eight months earlier, the Pirates eliminated the Lions in the Quarterfinals of the WNIT.
THE OPPONENT
Iowa State is coming off a Sweet 16 run in last year's NCAA Tournament. The undefeated Cyclones (3-0) most recently earned an 88-85 win at UNI on Wednesday, which was the first time under head coach Bill Fennelly, and only the fifth time in program history, the Cyclones have won a road game when allowing 85 or more points.
• Ashley Joens already owns her fair share of career records at Iowa State, but the fifth-year senior added another one to her collection on Wednesday night as Joens took over the career field goals made record, surpassing Angie Welle's (1999-02) total of 791. Joens enters Sunday's contest on 795 career field goals.
• Stephanie Soares continues to show that she will make an impact at the NCAA Division I level after her latest performance at UNI on Wednesday. The two-time NAIA National Player of the Year finished with 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting (including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers) and six rebounds in just 26 minutes of action.
