WHAT TO KNOW:
STARTING IN THE WIN COLUMN
• Columbia traveled to the southwest corner of the Volunteer State and took down Memphis, 77-69, on opening night. The Lions used a strong fourth quarter to overtake the Tigers, outscoring them 27-15 over the final 10 minutes. Columbia's top returning scorer, Abbey Hsu, lit up the nets for 24 points and was 4-for-9 from downtown. Hannah Pratt (15) and Jaida Patrick (14) also reached double figures in the victory, which was Columbia's fourth in its last five season openers.
SCHEDULE OF CHAMPIONS
• Delaware is the first of six potential dates against NCAA Tournament opponents on this year's schedule. Four of those games come in the non-conference season, which include the reigning CAA Champion Blue Hens, reigning Atlantic 10 Tournament Champion UMass, 2022 NCAA Sweet 16 participant Iowa State (Nov. 20), and a potential matchup against Miami over Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 27).
• Coming up on Sunday, the Lions will meet the first of three 2021-22 WNIT participants when they host Vanderbilt. A rematch against the team that eliminated the Lions from the WNIT, Seton Hall, takes place four days later on Nov. 17 in South Orange, New Jersey. The non-conference season comes to a close at home on Dec. 28 against first-round participant Ohio, which fell to the eventual WNIT champion, South Dakota State.
A SEASON TO REMEMBER:
• Columbia is coming off its best season in program history in 2021-22, putting together a record of 25-7, 12-2 Ivy, to shatter the program records in both wins and Ivy League wins. Its 25 wins accounted for seven more than its previous best NCAA Div. I campaign (18-10 in 2009-10), and were four more than the 21-6 record the 1985-86 New York State AIAW champions had at the NCAA Div. III level.
• The 2021-22 Lions played in the postseason for the first time in 36 years. Last year's team blew out Yale, 67-38, in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals, lost a tough battle to nationally ranked Princeton in the tournament championship and went on to win three games in the WNIT. Columbia's run to the WNIT Quarterfinals was the deepest by any team in Ivy League history.
BRINGING IT ALL BACK
• The 2022-23 Lions return over 96 percent of their total scoring, rebounding and minutes from last season. To be specific, they return 98.3 percent of their scoring, 97.6 percent of their rebounding and 96.7 percent of their minutes. Last year's lone graduating senior was Mikayla Markham, who is now playing a grad year at St. Francis Brooklyn.
THURSDAY'S OPPONENT
• Delaware (1-0) opened up the 2022-23 season Monday night with a strong second-half performance to dethrone reigning Big South Champion Longwood, 82-62, in Farmville, Virginia. The victory was the first for newly appointed head coach Sarah Jenkins, who came over from the coaching staff at Penn State.
• Delaware hoisted up its third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference championship after dethroning Drexel on Mar. 13, 2022. The Blue Hens earned the right to go dancing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 and the fifth time in program history.
• The Blue Hens return six members from the 2022 CAA championship team and welcome seven newcomers to Newark, five of whom are transfers. Highlighting this year's roster are junior guard Tara Cousins, fifth-year guard Jewel Smalls and graduate student transfer guard Kharis Idom from UMass Lowell. Jenkins' squad also includes four members that have 3+ years of playing experience at the Division I level.
