Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hsu Sizzles for 34, Sets Another School Record in Win at UMass

Lions exact more revenge from last season and earn another resume-boosting win

AMHERST, Mass. Abbey Hsu put her name down in yet another spot of the Columbia women's basketball record books, scoring a career-high 34 points and knocking down 9-of-11 from 3-point range to lead the Lions past reigning Atlantic 10 champions Massachusetts, 83-74, Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center.

Hsu's nine triples are the most in a game by a Lion in program history and tie for the second-most in Ivy League history. She knocked down five in the first quarter and started the game a perfect 6-for-6 from downtown early in the second quarter. She had 22 points at the half and UMass (8-3) had no answer for Hsu or Columbia (9-2) in the second half. The Lions ended the afternoon 14-for-28 from the perimeter, extending their lead to as many as 17 midway through the third quarter.

"This is huge. We called it revenge week," said Hsu, as Columbia exacted revenge from losses to Stony Brook and UMass a year ago. "This was to prove that we are a better team than we were last year. We want to be a team that competes with teams in the postseason and we proved that tonight." The junior phenom added six rebounds, four assists and two steals to her tally. She had 17 of Columbia's 22 first-quarter points, nearly a year to the day that she scored a program-record 19 in a single quarter against the Minutewomen.

"This is [Hsu] every day in practice," head coach Megan Griffith '07CC said. "She sees so much attention most of the time and tonight [UMass] didn't guard her really any differently [than anyone else]. They didn't really give her a different coverage … Tonight she was able to breathe a little bit and shoot, and that's what she does in practice. She's such a high-volume, high-making shotmaker and a really special kid to coach."

Senior Kaitlyn Davis also gave the Minutewomen problems throughout, going 7-for-9 from the field on her way to 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal. Kitty Henderson notched her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while tallying five of the Lions' 22 assists.

Hsu's opening trey came 1:25 into the game. Treys two and three came in the midst of a 14-4 run that put the Lions up double figures. Hannah Pratt, the only other Lion to score in the quarter, mixed in a triple of her own and two free throws, but the rest was all Hsu, whose fifth and final triple of the quarter had Columbia doubling up UMass, 22-11. "The first shot went in and then it kind of felt good," Hsu said. "Props to my teammates for getting me the ball and following the game plan. Our game plan was to shoot a lot of threes."

Hsu made it 6-for-6 at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter before finally showing her human side with her first miss just before halftime. Seven points by Kaitlyn Davis helped the Lions maintain their advantage at the break.

Columbia's offense exploded for 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting in the third. They started the period 8-for-8 from the field and opened up a 60-43 lead on a Davis cut six minutes into the half.

The Lions remained in control the rest of the way with Hsu hitting her record-setting ninth trey a minute into the fourth quarter.

Columbia will now prepare to take on LIU (2-8) in its last game before breaking for finals. Tip-off from the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
