Lions and Ephs go head-to-head at 6 p.m. ET
NEW YORK — The Columbia men's and women's squash teams will play their first home matches of the year when they host Williams College on Friday. The matches begin at StreetSquash in Harlem at 6 p.m. ET.
The No. 8 Columbia women (0-2) are coming off two hard-fought, 5-4, road losses against No. 7 Virginia (Nov. 13) and No. 3 Drexel (Dec. 2). Returning First Team All-Ivy League sophomore Simmi Chan played in the top spot in both contests and has started the year 2-0. Chan took out Virginia's Meagan Best in four games and Drexel's Alina Bushma in straights. Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Farida Mohamed is 1-0. Senior Ellie McVeigh is 1-1 in the top nine.
The No. 9 Columbia men's team (0-2) is also in search of its first victory. The Lions earned three points in a loss to No. 5 Virginia and were unfortunate to be handed a shutout at No. 7 Drexel. Sameer Saxena, Zach Nam and Chaitanya Shah own Columbia's three individual wins so far. Shah won a thriller, 13-11, 8-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, over UVA's Cullen Little at the No. 4 position. Despite not taking any of the team points against Drexel, three Lions went to five games.
Williams comes into Friday ranked No. 14 on the men's side and No. 15 on the women's side. Last season, Columbia took a 9-0 win for the men and a 6-3 win for the women. That men's match also featured three duals that went the distance. The women's match saw the Lions go a combined 15-1 in games from the Nos. 1-5 positions.
