Columbia just kicked off its own 2022-23 campaign last weekend, when the Lions took part in the Rutgers Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon. There were many great individual performances in the competition, including a first place finish in the men's one mile race by Juan Zarate-Sanchez (4:25.20). Meanwhile, Rory Clare took home first place inn the women's one-mile race, clocking in at 5:07.25. Julia Jordahl-Henry was the star of the field events, taking first place in the women's high jump with a 1.75m jump.
Then on Saturday, the Lions sent student-athletes to various competitions throughout the northeast. Tyler Berg took part in the Sharonn Colvear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University, and set a new school record in the 5k run with a time of 13:41. Meanwhile, at the Crowell Open, Tiffany Bautista won the women's pentathlon with a score of 3191. She came out victorious in the 60m hurdles, shot put, long jump, and high jump with marks of 9.66, 9.37, 5.31, and 1.71, respectively.
Teams competing at the event besides Columbia and Yale include Quinnipiac, Hartford, Sacred Heart, and Southern Connecticut State. At last year's Yale Season Opener, the Bulldogs paced a similar field of competitors with 14 individual event wins.
