Six Athletes Finish in Top-5 in Saturday's Dr. Sander Challenge

Michael Danzi wins men's One Mile, Nicole Vanesse takes second in the women's 3,000-meter run; Lions claim three titles over weekend.

NEW YORK — Led by men's One Mile run champion Michael Danzi, six Columbia athletes placed among top-5 finishers Saturday at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge held at the Armory. Combining the weekend, Columbia won three events including the men's One Mile Run (Danzi), men's 3,000-meter run (David Vorbach) and men's distance medley relay (Solomon Fountain, Devon Davey, Justin O'Toole, and Danzi).
 
Danzi took the One Mile Run title after finishing with a 4:04.84 time. He edged out Virginia's Jackson Braddock (4:05.20) and UCLA's Jake Parker (4:05.22) for the win.
 
Nicole Vanasse took second in a close women's 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:19.97. She finished behind Empire Elite's Candace Archer (9:19.49).
 
Anna Jordahl-Henry (1.70m/5-07) and Kali Hatcher (12.11m/39-8 3/4) both took fourth place in their respective women's high jump and women's triple jump events. Devon Davey took also took fourth in the men's 400-meter dash (48:14), Patrick Passalacqua placed fifth in the men's shot put (16.58m/54-4 3/4), and Jahi Hernandez placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (21.91).
 
On Friday, Columbia claimed two events, including a school-record and victory by David Vorbach in the 5,000-meter run, and a one-second win in the men's distance medley relay.
 
Vorbach set a school-record with a 13:55.02 run in the 5,000-meters. Vorbach broke the previous record of 13:59.57 set by Steve Sundell in 2004. He won the event by nearly 10 seconds as teammate Tyler Berg finished second in 14:06.06. Vorbach led a group of six Lions who all finished among the field's top-10.
 
The Distance Medley Relay team won the title in 9:42.74, almost a second ahead of second place BYU at 9:43.76. Running for Columbia was Solomon Fountain, Devon Davey, Justin O'Toole, and Michael Danzi. The time of 9:42.74 ranks No. 9 in school history.
