
Columbia Scheduled for Weekend Slate at Ranked Tennessee

Men's tennis will face Charlotte and #2 Tennessee in Knoxville.
NEW YORK -- The Columbia men's tennis team will travel to Knoxville this weekend for a pair of matches against Charlotte and #2 Tennessee. The Lions are slated to meet Charlotte on Friday at 6:00 P.M. before battling ranked Tennessee, Sunday 1:00 P.M. Fans can watch both matches live or follow statistics courtesy of Tennessee Athletics.
Headlined by a two ranked singles competitors, Columbia will travel a talented squad ripe with both talent and experience. Sophomore Alex Kotzen officially cracked the Top 10 this week, earning an ITA national individual ranking of eight. Also improving since the fall's initial rankings is first-year Hugo Hashimoto. After earning his first individual victory from the top spot against ODU last weekend, the rookie jumped ten spots to now sit at 77th in the nation.
Charlotte enters the weekend owning a 3-2 spring record. After defeating Presbyterian 5-2 on Jan. 30, the 49ers swept Radford 7-0 on Feb. 6. Sophomore Stefanos Savva and doubles partner, redshirt freshman Coy Simon, rank eleventh in the nation as a duo while playing from the third and fourth position, respectively, as singles. Graduate transfer Thomas Brown owns the top spot after moving to Charlotte from the #12 University of South Carolina.
Tennesse sits at 6-1 on the year, posting its only loss in its most recent match at Ohio State. The Volunteers ceded their top-ranking to the, then, #5 Buckeyes in a 0-4 loss. Despite the most recent result, Tennessee boasts a pair of victories over ranked opponents, defeating #4 TCU 4-3 on the road and #6 Wake Forest at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Half of the Volunteers' ten-man roster earned individual national rankings this week led by #10 Johannus Monday. The sophomore was a 2021 ITA All-American as a freshman, amassing a 32-9 singles record in his first year. 2021 NCAA Doubles National Champion, Adam Walton follows with an individual No. 21 ranking.
Graduate student Mark Wallner ranks at #78 while senior Emile Hudd closes out the Top 100 at #100. Hudd joins freshman #114 Shunsuke Mitsu to create the nation's ninth-ranked doubbles pair.
