5 THINGS TO KNOW:
1. 20-WIN SEASON
• Columbia won its 20th game of the season last Saturday, outscoring Brown in every quarter and dominating from start to finish, 85-56, at Levien Gymnasium. The game was also Senior Day for Columbia's lone senior,
Mikayla Markham.
• The Lions have secured their first 20-win season as an NCAA Div. I member – the program joined the Div. I ranks in 1986-87 – and has won 20 games for just the second time in program history. Columbia's other 20-win season came in 1985-86, when the Lions went 21-6 en route to the New York State AIWA Championships and an NCAA Div. III Regional appearance. That team was inducted into the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
2. HISTORY IN THE MAKING
• The 2021-22 season has seen Columbia set many firsts and numerous school records, beginning at the very start of the season when they started 5-0 in the first time. Columbia's other notable season accomplishments include:
- Defeating an ACC team on the road (Clemson, Nov. 13)
- Starting Ivy League play 7-0 (previous best was 2-0)
- Winning a program record eight consecutive games (Dec. 13 - Feb. 4)
- Winning the most Ivy League games in program history (11)
- Winning the most games overall in the program's Div. I era (20)
- Defeating Penn for the first time since 2011
- Sweeping Penn for the first time since 2010
- Sweeping Yale for the first time since 2011
3. HSU-TING THE THREE
• Sophomore
Abbey Hsu has set the new Columbia single-season record for made 3-pointers. Hsu enters Friday's game with 85 on the season, snapping the previous record of 74 (Alexa Giuliano, 2014-15).
• Hsu's 85 triples rank in a tie for sixth in Ivy League women's basketball history. She is 14 behind the record of 99, set by Harvard's Katie Benzan in 2017-18. Next up on the list is Sophi Bikofsky, who had 86 at Brown in 2013-14. Princeton's Sandi Bittler (89, 1989-90) is fourth. Former Princeton head coach and Dartmouth player Courtney Banghart owns the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, hitting 97 in 1998-99 and 91 in 1999-00.
• This season, Hsu ranks top 10 nationally in 3-pointers made (85), attempted (224) and made per game (3.40). Her percentage from the outside (.379) is also top 75 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the Ivy League.
4. HEADING TO IVY MADNESS
• Columbia has clinched its spot at the 2022 Ivy League Tournament, which will be held March 11-12 in Boston. The Lions clinched their spot on Feb. 18 with a win against Harvard. In 2020, the Lions posted an 8-6 Ivy League record to finish fourth, but were never able to compete in the tournament due to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Columbia is locked into the No. 2 seed for the Ivy League Tournament. The Lions will play their semifinal game against the No. 3 seed on Friday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
5. SCOUTING CORNELL
• The Big Red (9-15, 4-9 Ivy) are coming off back-to-back losses to Penn and Yale that eliminated them from Ivy League Tournament contention. Last Saturday, they fell to the Bulldogs in New Haven, 56-40.
• Senior Theresa Grace Mbanefo is the team's leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points per game at a 48.8 percent mark from the floor. The 6-foot forward also averages a team-best 7.9 rebounds and has 37 total blocks, second-most behind Yale's Camilla Emsbo (54). Cornell typically likes to slow the game down and force opponents to grind, allowing just 60.8 points per contest while scoring just 53.1.
