Twenty-four Lions to compete in individual championship competition Sunday at Vassar College; Sylvie Binder (women’s foil) and Ariana Mangano (women’s epee) enter weekend as No. 1 seeds.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Twenty-four Columbia-Barnard fencers are headed to Vassar College to compete in the 2022 NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday at Walker Field House. The Lions are sending the maximum number of qualifiers, 24, to the strips to face off against the region's best during the one-day, eight-hour event.
The regional features fencers from 18 different schools. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. ET and ends for the three women's weapons at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. Two Columbia fencers will enter the weekend as No. 1 seeds: Sylvie Binder (women's foil) and Ariana Mangano (women's epee). A total of 17 Columbia fencers are ranked among the top-8 seeds in respective weapons. No. 2 seeds include Daniella Timofeyev (women's sabre), Zander Rhodes (women's foil), Yana Botvinnik (women's epee), Sidarth Kumbla (men's foil), No. 3 seeds are Nora Burke (women's sabre), Delphine Devore (women's foil), Valentina Bos (women's epee), and Ashton Daniel (men's foil).
Sunday's Northeast Regional marks the start of postseason fencing for the highly ranked Lions squads. The Men are currently in the No. 2 spot in U.S. Fencing Coaches Poll, while the women are also tabbed at No. 3 in the nation. The next coaches' poll will be announced later this week.
Columbia is looking to build on regular season momentum as the Lions' men's team won its seventh in the last eight Ivy League championships with a perfect 4-0 record and finished 27-5 overall in dual matches, while the women's squad finished tied for second at the Ivy League Round Robins with a 4-2 record and also went 28-6-1 overall in dual matches.
NCAA Northeast Regional competition helps determine the qualifying fencers for the NCAA Division I National Championship, which will take place in the Castellan Family Fencing Center at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. from March 24-27. Columbia hopes to send 12 fencers to South Bend. Only Columbia's top two fencers for each of the six weapons (three men's and three women's) can qualify for the National Championships. In the end, the qualifiers are determined by a formula based on 60 percent weight on regional bouts and 40 percent weight on regular season results. No qualifiers are official until the NCAA's announcement on Tuesday, March 15 when NCAA Championship selections are posted.
Competing teams in the NCAA Northeast Regional include Boston College, Brandeis, Brown, City College of New York, Columbia-Barnard, Cornell, Harvard, Hunter, LIU, MIT, NYU, Sacred Heart, St. John's, Tufts, Vassar, Wellesley, and Yeshiva.
The Northeast Regional is one four NCAA fencing regionals as the others include: Mid-Atlantic/South (Princeton, N.J.), Midwest (Ohio State), and West (Incarnate Word). More information on the system is available at this link.
