No. 6 Miami Defeats No. 58 Columbia 6-1 at Miami Open

Columbia and Miami play in the first-ever collegiate match at the Miami Open; Akanksha Bhan wins singles victory over No. 46 ranked Eden Richardson, Lions’ Bhan and Melissa Sakar take doubles match.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. —In the first-ever college match at the Miami Open, No. 58 ranked Columbia dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 6 ranked Miami, Fla. Friday evening as part of the 2022 Miami Open which was held at Hard Rock Stadium. The loss drops Columbia to 10-8 overall, while Miami improves to 13-3.
Miami represented the eight nationally ranked team that Columbia has faced this year.
Before a sizable South Florida crowd, the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point with two wins in three matches. Miami's Diana Khodan and Maya Tahan won a 6-1 decision at No. 2 doubles over Columbia's Winta Tewolde and Anna Zhang. Audrey Boch-Collins and Isabella Pfennig followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Columbia's Shivani Amineni and Jennifer Kerr. Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar notched a tough 7-6 (7-5) victory at No. 1 over Miami's Daevenia Achong and Eden Richardson. The match took nearly an additional 20 minutes to complete following a lengthy tiebreaker.
Miami won five singles matches. Khodan won a 6-1, 6-1 match over Columbia's Michelle Xu at No. 6 singles, No. 52 ranked Achong registered a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Columbia's Zhang, and No. 64 ranked Pfennig followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Columbia's Kerr.
Boch-Collins notched a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Columbia's Julia Haynes to take a 5-0 lead and Tahan registered a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (1-0) match over Columbia's Sakar.

The Miami Open is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 Series events on the ATP calendar, a WTA 1000 event on the WTA calendar, and features the top men's and women's players in the world. The tournament is widely regarded as the most glamourous on the ATP and WTA calendars because of Miami's unique personality, thriving nightlife, five-star hotels and restaurants, beautiful weather and beaches, and celebrity appeal, as well as its close proximity to both Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach.
Next week the Lions get back into Ivy League play when they hit the road for a two-match road swing at Harvard (Saturday, April 9) and Dartmouth (Sunday, April 10).
