No. 56 Women's Tennis Drops 4-1 Decision at Harvard

Melissa Sakar wins No. 3 singles match, while Winta Tewolde and Anna Zhang team for a doubles victory.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—No 56 ranked Columbia women's tennis dropped a 4-1 decision at Harvard Saturday afternoon at the Murr Center Indoor Courts. The loss drops Columbia to 10-9 on the year and 0-2 in the Ivy League, while Harvard improves to 11-7 and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Harvard took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. Columbia's Winta Tewolde and Anna Zhang gave the Lions the advantage with a 6-3 win over Harvard's Rachel Lim and Mihaela Marculescu at No .2 doubles, but the Crimson won the last two matches for the point. Maxi Duncan and Holly Fischer defeated Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Mellisa Sakar 6-4 at No. 2, then Angel You and Iveta Daujotaite defeated Columbia's Jennifer Kerr and Shivani Amineni 7-5 at No. 3.
Harvard went up 3-0 with back-to-back wins at No. 6 singles and No. 5 singles as You defeated Rachele Rimondini 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 and Sany Gawande defeated Clarine Lerby 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.
Columbia's Melissa Sakar then registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Harvard's Marculescu to cut the Harvard lead to 3-1.
But Harvard's Holly Fischer ended the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No 3 singles over Jennifer Kerr.
The final two matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles were close matches that could have gone either way.
On Sunday, Columbia takes on Dartmouth for the second of two matches on its weekend road trip to New England. First serve is at 1 p.m.
