Columbia picks up a 7-0 victory over the visiting Big Green.
Westchester, NY -- The No. 23 Columbia men's tennis team earned its first Ivy League win of the 2022 season in a 7-0 route of Dartmouth at LifeTime Westchester. Max Westphal, Hugo Hashimoto, and Austen Huang powered the lions victory, winning in both the singles and doubles competitions; while the Lions collected straight set victories in every singles match.
Despite dropping the very first match of the afternoon, Columbia rebounded to win on out. Columbia's top doubles team of Westphal and Theo Winegar defeated Dartmouth's Anders Gibbons and Dominik Pauli, 6-4. Hashimoto and Huang secured the doubles' point in a 6-3 defeat of Logan Chang and Hugo Ilie.
This momentum carried into the singles competition where Henry Ruger defeated Ilie in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) to award the Lions a 2-0 lead. From the sixth position Roko Horvat picked up a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Pierce Widdecomb to further extend this lead.
Huang clinched the match from the fourth court, defeating the Big Green's Alex Knox-Jones in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). Though overall match decision had been determined, courts one through three engaged in a battle of each team's bests. Columbia's number two, Hashimoto, overcome Carlos Guerrero Alvarez in an impressive 6-2, 6-1 display. Westphal went on to finish next, defeating Pauli 6-4, 6-4.
No. 12 Alex Kotzen fought through the day's closest singles set, overcoming Gibbons in the first set 7-6(4). The junior went on to handily defeat his Dartmouth opponent in the second set, 6-4.
