NEW YORK – Columbia volleyball (3-8, 0-2) went up against Yale (10-1, 2-0) in the Ivy League home opener on Friday night. The Lions fells to the top-seeded Bulldogs in straight sets.
Saj McBurrows got things going, starting off the set with a powerful kill on an assist from
Ruby van der Heide. Yale then outscored Columbia 11-3, creating a comfortable margin. The Bulldogs grew their lead to 11 later in the set, carrying the momentum until the final point. Yale won 25-11.
The Lions were facing a two-point hole, trailing 7-5 before Yale ripped off a 4-0 run.
The Bulldogs generated a double-digit lead later in the set, going ahead 17-7. Columbia got three points back, but Yale maintained the edge for the rest of the set, winning 25-17.
After falling down 6-2 to start the third set, Columbia scored five unanswered points. Justema Harper had a kill and
Kiara Robichaud tallied a service ace during the run. The teams were neck-and-neck for the next 11 rallied and Yale held a slight two-point cushion. Six consecutive points from the Bulldogs pulled the momentum back into their favor. Columbia cut the deficit to four points towards the end of the set, but Yale earned a six-point victory.
Up Next, the Lions are right back at it tomorrow, hosting Brown at 5:00 p.m.
