
Lions Split Doubleheader to Open 2023 Season

Women's Tennis lost to Old Dominion and bounced back to defeat Morgan State to start the spring schedule
NORFOLK, Va. – The Columbia women's tennis team swept Morgan State in the second half of a Saturday doubleheader after losing to Old Dominion to start the day at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Lions are 1-1 to start the spring season.
MATCH 1 VS. OLD DOMINION
The duo of Anna Zhang and Sophia Wang earned the first win of the spring season for the Lions in doubles play to start the match against Old Dominion in an impressive 6-1 win over No. 52 Alexandra Viktorovich/Allison Isaacs.
The Monarchs would rally back win the other two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. The ODU duo of Tatsiana Sasnouskaya/Sofia Johnson defeated Columbia's Fatima Keita/Rachele Rimondini, 6-2. Alesya Yakubovich/Shahar Biran then secured the doubles point for ODU with a 6-4 win against Julia Haynes/Michelle Xu.
ODU won singles matches on the top three courts to finish off a 4-0 win over the Lions. No. 37 Sasnouskaya (ODU) took down Zhang (COL), 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 spot to start singles action. Sophia Johnson (ODU) then defeated Haynes (COL), 7-5, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. No. 112 Biran sealed the win for the Monarchs with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Columbia's Shivani Amineni in the No. 3 singles.
MATCH 2 VS. MORGAN STATE
The Lions rebounded in a big way to finish Saturday as they swept Morgan State in a decisive 7-0 win. Columbia rolled through doubles action by winning all three matches to take the doubles point.
Zhang/Wang finished the day 2-0 in doubles action on the No. 1 court as they defeated Asmara Rose/Hannah Smith, 6-2. Keita/Rimondini then notched their first doubles win in 2023 with a 6-1 win over Averiana Mitchell/Lauryn Hall in No. 2 doubles. Haynes/Xu finished off the doubles slate with a dominant 6-0 win against Stefania Moysiadi/Ana Aran Torrente in the No. 3 doubles.
Singles action was the same story as all six singles matches were won in two sets by Columbia. Amineni took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Rose in the No. 1 singles. Haynes followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Smith at the No. 2 spot. Rimondini posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Mitchell in the No. 3 singles. Clarine Lerby saw action for the first time Saturday at the No. 4 spot where she defeated Hall, 6-1, 6-2. Xu won her match at the No. 5 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Torrente. Alexandra Torre rounded out the singles slate with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Moysiadi.
UP NEXT
The Lions head to Malibu, California next weekend for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Columbia will play Memphis on Saturday before playing either Pepperdine or Clemson on Sunday.
