Madison Kim nets lone Lions goal
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Columbia field hockey dropped a 3-1 decision at Fairfield from University Field on Sunday afternoon.
Madison Kim scored her first career goal late in the fourth quarter to break up the shutout. Anabelle Brodeur sent in a pass off a penalty corner to Maya Walker, who fired a shot that was blocked. Following a loose ball, Kim poked it home to get Columbia (3-7, 0-3) on the board.
Columbia's first scoring chance of the day came less than a minute into the match off a penalty corner. Brodeur tried to push one into the back of the cage near the goal line but Stags goalkeeper Payton Rahn kept it out. Kim followed up on the rebound but it went wide.
Fairfield (7-2, 1-0) scored the match's first goal shortly after. Lucie Vincent backhanded a shot past Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer to give Fairfield a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the first quarter. A minute later, Fairfield added a second goal off a penalty corner by Erin McGinley to make it 2-0.
Sophia Abate made a strong bid to get the Lions on the board midway through the second frame, but was denied by Madison Milhous, who made a defensive save.
Columbia's best scoring chance in the second quarter came with five seconds until the break when Jeannine Turgeon fired a backhanded shot that was saved by a diving Rahn.
Just three shots were recorded between the two teams in the third quarter, with only one coming on goal. Lindsey Yu got Columbia's lone shot off in the frame, but it went wide.
Fairfield netted its third goal to take a 3-0 lead with 11:34 left in the match. Dominique Vanderzee intercepted a pass and shot one into the cage for the goal. Kim's goal later in the frame made it 3-1.
Wimmer finished with four saves for the Lions. Columbia outshot Fairfield, 12-9 (9-7 on goal). Walker had three shots on goal and Yu recorded two.
