Volleyball Taken Down by Harvard in Three Sets

Avery Jones equals career-high with team-high eight kills

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Columbia volleyball team lost its second road Ivy League game of the weekend on Saturday evening, falling to the Harvard Crimson in straight sets (25-10, 25-16, 25-20).

It took a bit for the Lions to find their footing in this contest, with Harvard using a 9-0 run early in the first set to gain an 18-7 advantage. The Crimson would go on to win it 25-10, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Columbia bounced back in the second set, scoring the first four points sparked by a kill from Avery Jones and capped on a block from Harper Justema and Juliana Williamson. The Harvard offense wasn't dormant long, eventually using a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. That lead remained until it was 21-16, and Harvard would score four straight points to clinch the set and gain a 2-0 edge in the match.

The third set was the most competitive of the match, but the Lions just couldn't get over the hump and keep the game going. The Crimson held a 20-18 lead, and Justema and Soah Franklin smacked kills to keep the Lions in it, but it wouldn't be enough as Harvard went on to win 25-20.

Jones equaled her career-high in the match with a team-high eight kills. Franklin added seven kills to go with four total blocks. Annabel Happ collected a team-high 18 assists. Delaney Seaman and Lauren Cho tallied seven digs each.

Columbia will close out its home schedule next weekend with a game against Penn on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and a match against Princeton on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Friday's match the Lions will be hosting Alumni Day, while Saturday Columbia will celebrate Senior Day.
