NEW YORK — The Columbia football team posted its second straight home shutout with a 16-0 victory over Marist on Saturday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium. The Lions played in less-than-ideal conditions for the third consecutive week but made enough plays to even their record at 2-2 to wrap up non-conference play.
Columbia held the Red Foxes (2-3) to 34 rushing yards, forced four turnovers and were 4-for-4 in stopping Marist in the red zone to improve their national-leading mark in that category.
Aaron Brebnor had a pair of interceptions and
Reid Spachman registered 2.5 tackles for a loss.
"Our guys went out there and battled," interim head coach
Mark Fabish said. "The coolest thing was keeping them out of the endzone on the last drive. (Marist) had a bunch of cracks at it, the guys stood strong and we were able to get our second shutout at home."
Offensively, the Lions racked up 222 rushing yards. Ty'son Edwards eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time with 105 and added a pair of touchdowns. Joey Giorgi posted 83 yards on 15 carries and quarterback Caden Bell added 67, including a game-long 35 run.
"Ty'son prepares every week, every day and does a great job in everything he does," Fabish continued. "He's a glue guy on our special teams and had more carries today and found the endzone twice. It was a great job by Ty'son."
Carter McFadden set up the first Lions score with a 26-yard punt return to start Columbia's second drive of the game in plus territory. Columbia ran 10 consecutive run-plays and punched it in from a yard out on a fourth down rush from Edwards at the 1 to give Columbia the early lead. The Lions missed the extra point try to keep it 6-0 with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Despite a couple of Columbia fumbles in the second quarter, the defense kept Marist off the board and remained in control before two more scoring possessions to end the second quarter.
Two big runs by Giorgi of 17 and 11 yards helped put the Lions into the red zone again to set up a field goal try. First-year Hugo Merry fought through the rain and a gust of wind to connect from 40 yards to extend the margin to 9-0 with 6:26 left in the first half.
After another quick stop, Edwards struck again with time winding down in the second after he found the endzone from 22 yards out to make it 16-0 at the midway point.
Marist had the ball inside the Columbia 40 four times in the second half, and each time, the Lions were up to the task and were a perfect 4-for-4 on the Red Foxes' fourth down attempts. Marist had first and goal from the 10 with time running out and forced four incompletions to preserve the shutout.
"We talked to the guys in the locker room at the half about getting a turnover or two, and
Aaron Brebnor took care of two of those by himself, and the rest of the defense got a couple others."
The Lions remain home to take on Penn next Saturday, October 14, at Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium in their Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on SNY and ESPN+.
