Lions Come Up Empty at Princeton

Tigers score three first-half goals to run away

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Columbia men's soccer team was dealt a 4-0 loss to Princeton Saturday afternoon at Roberts Soccer Stadium.

The first 20 minutes of the game were mostly possession-oriented. The Lions had a good look to break through at the 12-minute mark. Ryan Wallace took the ball down toward the end line and crossed it in for Joao Lima at the near-side of the six. Lima attempted to poke in his shot but was challenged by the Princeton defense from behind, sending the ball out for a goal kick.

The goalless game was broken up by Princeton (4-4-1, 1-1-1 Ivy) in the 24th minute. It seemingly happened out of nowhere when Walker Gillespie played a ball ahead for Daniel Ittycheria. With two Columbia defenders on either side of Ittycheria, the Princeton forward was able to quickly flick the ball ahead, send himself one-on-one with Michael Collodi and finish the opportunity.

The second goal came less than 90 seconds later. This time, Princeton broke down the Columbia defense. A ball from the center circle was bulleted forward through the defense. Whit Gamblin flicked it to his left for Will Francis, who struck it first time to double the home team's lead.

The Tigers tacked on a third before the first half came to a close. Three of their nine shots found the back of the net, while two of Columbia's four looks were saved.

The second half saw the Tiger attack fire 10 shots to Columbia's one. Daniel Ittycheria netted his second goal of the day and Princeton's fourth of the match in the 55th minute, heading a cross sent into the box back across the face of goal.

Columbia (2-6-2, 0-3-0 Ivy) will hope to bounce back next Friday, October 13, when it returns home to face Dartmouth. First kick from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
