NEW YORK – Sophomore
Sophia Wang posted four wins this weekend in the ITA Northeast Regional hosted by Columbia at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center to earn a spot in the ITA Super Regionals in two weeks.
Wang will compete in singles at the ITA Super Regionals hosted by Army in West Point, New York starting on Friday, October 22. She will be playing for a spot in the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego.
Wang got the weekend started with two wins Friday. Wang cruised with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Abbie Tyler (St. Bonaventure) before posting a 6-3, 6-1 win against Hofstra's Daniela Rodriguez to reach the singles round of 32.
Due to an altered schedule because of rain this weekend, Wang didn't play Saturday and came back for the final two matches Sunday. Wang got the day started with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Ivy League rival Emma Baker (Cornell). Wang then met Kim Minchae (Rutgers) in the round of 16 looking to earn one of eight singles spots in the ITA Super Regionals. Wang didn't disappoint as she capped off the weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Minchae to earn a spot in the super regional without dropping a set during regional competition.
First-year
Salma Farhat came close to also securing a spot in the super regionals, but dropped a tight 6-4, 6-7(5), [7-10] match to Princeton's Maia Sung in the singles round of 16 Sunday. Salma earned a bye in the first round of singles, so she just played three matches this weekend. She got started with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anastasia Gubanova (St. Bonaventure) Saturday. Farhat then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Temple's Jessie Zheng Sunday before falling to Sung.
Fellow first-year
Gayathri Krishnan also had a strong showing as she advanced to the round of 32 singles before dropping a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, [8-10] decision to Yana Gurevich (Rutgers) on Sunday.
The duos of Krishnan and Farhat and
Julia Haynes and
Sophia Strugnell each posted a win this weekend. Haynes and Strugnell received a bye and then took an 8-3 win over St. Francis' Kadzinski and Vinces to earn a spot in the doubles round of 16. Krishnan and Farhat made it to the round of 32 with an 8-3 win against Lobo Corral and Bruu-Syversen from Stony Brook in the first round.
The Lions will be back in action at the Fordham Invite, spanning from Friday, October 20 through Sunday, October 22 at Fordham's Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.
