Wimmer is the second Lion ever to earn NFHCA Player of the Week
MANAHAWKIN, N.J. — The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has named Columbia field hockey junior goalkeeper Katie Wimmer as the National Defensive Player of the Week. Wimmer becomes the second Lion to receive the honor as Kelsey Farkas in 2019 was the first. The award debuted in 2016.
Wimmer, who was also named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, made a career-high 23 saves in the season finale on Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire. Wimmer's 23 saves against the Wildcats were the most by an Ivy League goalkeeper in a match since at least 2009 and most by a Division I goalkeeper this season. Wimmer was one save shy of tying the single game record in program history.
Wimmer made 11 saves at Dartmouth on Saturday, which was a season high for a day until her career performance on Sunday.
Following the completion of the regular season, Wimmer leads the Ivy League and is fourth in the country with 7.53 saves per game. Her 113 saves this year also lead the conference and rank fourth in the country. The Windham, New Hampshire native leads the league with a .785 save percentage.
