
Lions Outlast Yale in First Round of ECAC Championships

Columbia improves to 2-3 overall in dual matches
HANOVER, N.H. – With all eyes on the No. 4 singles match, Sophia Wang prevailed in a thrilling three-set 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 victory over Vivian Cheng to clinch a 4-3 win for the Columbia women's tennis team on Friday afternoon in the first round of the ECAC Championships.
The Lions move to 2-3 overall this spring with the win. Columbia will advance to the second round of the ECAC Championships, which will be played Saturday evening.
Columbia struck first by clinching the doubles point in the dual match. The duo of Winta Tewolde and Michelle Xu earned a 6-2 win over Sophia Zaslow and Jamie Kim at the No. 3 spot to start doubles action. The No. 60 ranked duo of Anna Zhang and Wang then earned a 6-4 win over Chelsea Kung and Vivian Cheng at the No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point for the Lions.
Anna Zhang quickly extended the Columbia lead to start singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, Chelsea Kung in the No. 1 singles. Yale answered with their first point of the match as Shrivastava defeated Julia Haynes, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot.
Yale would tie the match as Rebecca Lynn posted a 6-4, 6-4 win against Xu in the No. 6 singles. The Lions answered right back with a win at the No. 3 spot as Rimondini took a 6-3, 6-4 win over Guerry.
The Bulldogs would tie the match one more time as Zaslow earned a 6-1, 7-6(1) win over Clarine Lerby at the No. 5 singles. The tie would be short-lived though as Wang won the only-three set match of the day to propel the Lions to the win.

The Lions are back on the court Saturday for the second round of the ECAC Championships. Columbia is set to meet Brown for a 5 p.m. first serve.
