PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Columbia men's swimming and diving team remains in fourth place after the third night of the 2023 Ivy League Championships. This year's event, hosted on the campus of Brown University, will officially come to a close tomorrow after one more full day of competition.
The Lions have accumulated 654.5 points thus far, inching closer to Yale who still has sole possession of third place with 698 points. Harvard holds a slight lead in first place with 1025 points, with Princeton right behind the Big Red with 1009 points in second place.
Tonight, Columbia competed in the 1000-free, 100-fly, 400-IM, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, and 400-medley relay.
The first highlight of the night came in the first event of the night, when first-year
Adam Wu set his third program record of the meet with a gold-medal winning performance in the 1000-free. He won the event with a time of 8:51.64 which was also a pool record.
Then,
Demirkan Demir followed that up by defending his title in the 100-breast with a Brown pool-record time of 52.03, missing his own program record by six tenths of a second. He is now an Ivy League Champion for the second consecutive season in the 100-breast.
Among the other top-eight finishers on the night for Columbia included a fourth-place finish by
Michael Chang in the 100-breast (52.84), a fifth-place finish by
Brian Lee in the 100-fly (46.60), and a sixth-place finish by
Isaac Beers in the 100-back (47.47).
"Another good day for the Lions!" Head Coach
Jim Bolster said. "Although Adam and Demirkan grabbed the headlines, we had a terrific team effort today. Everyone contributed points this evening, and we narrowed the gap between us and Yale. We have a big task ahead of us tomorrow, but we will be ready."
Competition resumes tomorrow for the final time at 11 a.m. Finals are set for 6 p.m. Both rounds will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
