The Lions opened the new Columbia Tennis Center with a dominating victory
NEW YORK — The Columbia women's tennis team opened the new Columbia Tennis Center in style, earning a 6-1 victory over Hofstra Sunday. The Lions took the doubles point and won 5-of-6 in singles to improve to 3-5 on the spring season.
"We're so grateful to all the donors, alumni and fans that helped make this beautiful new facility possible," said head coach Ilene Weintraub after the match. "It was so exciting to get in here to play a match for the first time and we're so happy to open the building with a win."
In No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, the pairs of Anna Zhang and Sophia Wang and Rachele Rimondini and Shivani Amineni each blanked the Pride, 6-0 to take the opening point.
Clarine Lerby was the first singles player to finish at No. 5, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Hofstra's Sabina Mohamed. At No. 6, Columbia's Carolyn Brodsky picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abigail Higgins and Winta Tewolde clinched the match for the Lions at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over April Sanchez.
Michelle Xu followed with a win at No. 5 (6-1, 6-0) over Ananyaa Bhargova and Rimondini won (6-1, 6-4) over Deniz Snyder at No. 2.
Julia Haynes and Jimena Garbino battled at No. 1 in a match that featured a number of long points. Haynes took the first set, 6-1, and took a lead in the second. However, Garbino rallied to tie the set, 5-5, before Haynes was forced to medically retire.
"I was really proud of the women and how they competed today," Weintraub said. "They came out really solid in doubles and stuck to our gameplan of trying to finish with two players at the net and having a high first serve percentage and they kept in rolling in singles."
