Baseball Downed By Tulane, 5-2, On Saturday

Lions look to win the series on Sunday

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Columbia baseball was defeated by Tulane, 5-2, on Saturday night from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The Lions had just five hits in game two of the three-game set. Tulane starting pitcher Chandler Welch went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Michael Lombardi tossed four scoreless innings in relief and struck out seven. Lombardi retired the final 11 Columbia batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.

For Columbia, starting pitcher Joe Sheets was tagged with the loss but threw five innings and allowed four unearned runs on seven hits. The sophomore's ERA sits at 2.25 after his fourth start of the season.

Columbia scored first for the 11th straight game when Jack Kail grounded out to bring home Seth Dardar in the second inning. It was Kail's fifth RBI of the series after driving in a career-high four runs on Friday night.

The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an eight-pitch at-bat by Dardar. Dardar drove in Hayden Schott with a double for his 12th RBI of the season. The junior third baseman was the lone Lion to record two hits in the game.

Tulane tied the game in the fourth by scoring two runs on a base-hit and groundout. Both runs were credited as unearned after Columbia committed three errors in the inning. The Green Wave then took their first lead of the series in the fifth inning after adding two more runs. Bryaden Morrow singled and a fielding error caused an extra run to cross to make it 4-2.

In the home seventh, Tulane loaded the bases after Jafar Vorha walked three straight batters to start the frame. Derek Yoo was then called in from the bullpen and struck out the first batter he faced. Simon Baumgardt then singled to left field to drive in a run, giving Tulane a 5-2 lead. The next batter later, Yoo was able to get a ground ball to Dardar to start a 5-5-3 double play to end the inning.

The Lions fall to 6-8 with one more game to play before returning to New York for the home opener on Wednesday against Manhattan. Tulane moved to 4-15 on the season. Columbia goes for the series win on Sunday in game three with Tulane. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
