DAVIS, Calif. -- The Columbia lacrosse team (3-5) traveled to California this week, and took on the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Aggies emerged victorious, taking down the Lions 15-12 in a close battle.
Five Lions scored two goals each in the game, led by first-year Riya Batra who scored the first two goals of her career. Cecelia Messner, Annalisa Massaro, Cordelia Flemming, and Kate Cunning also scored twice.
The Aggies struck first, but Massaro had a quick answer to tie things up at 1-1. UC Davis would then go on a brief 3-0 run in the middle of the first quarter, but with 2:29 to go, the Lions went on a 3-0 run of their own to close out the period sparked by Cunning and capped by Batra.
The Aggies would outscore Columbia 4-1 in the second quarter, taking an 8-5 lead into the locker room.
UC Davis looked to be in control after they extended their lead to six by the end of the third quarter, but Columbia would not quit. The Lions tried to pull back into the game in the fourth, scoring the final four goals of the game, but it wouldn't be enough as the Aggies held on for the win.
Columbia goalkeeper
Ella Sangree collected 13 saves.
Ellie Eisner led the Lions with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Ellie Taylor had a team-high nine draw controls.
Next up, the Lions will resume Ivy League play against Brown on Friday, March 24 in Providence, Rhode Island. The first draw is set for 4 p.m.
