Baseball Drops Series Finale To Tulane, 6-3

Lions return to New York for home opener on Wednesday

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Columbia baseball fell to Tulane, 6-3, in the series finale on Sunday from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The Lions outhit Tulane 11-5 on Sunday but Columbia was just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Columbia's pitching staff walked 11 Tulane batters and struck out seven. Andy Blake led Columbia's offense with four hits and Skye Selinsky recorded the first three-hit game of his career.

Columbia (6-8) threatened early, as Griffin Palfrey and Blake both smacked singles into left field to leadoff the game. Tulane starting pitcher Ricky Castro then struck out three in a row swinging to escape the early jam. Castro allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out six over five innings. Reliever Brian Valigosky earned the win, Brandon Madrigal got tagged with the loss, and Cristian Sanchez picked up the save.

In the bottom of the second, the Green Wave (5-15) struck first to take a 1-0 lead. Brady Hebert drove in the game's first run with a single to right field. Lions starting pitcher JD Ogden walked three batters in the inning but worked out of trouble by getting Brennan Lambert to fly out. Ogden went two-plus innings, allowing two hits and the one run.

Blake missed a home run in the third inning by a few feet, launching one well over the fence but it just sliced to the left of the foul pole. Columbia got on the board in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Jack Kail's success this weekend continued when he tripled home Cole Hage and Selinsky for his sixth and seventh RBIs of the series to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Blake then singled in Kail to make it 3-1.

Tulane tied the game two runs in the home fifth to make it a 3-3 ball game. The Green Wave didn't record a hit in the inning but took advantage of a throwing error at third base to bring Columbia's lead within one and then a sacrifice fly to score the tying run.

The Green Wave re-took the lead in the sixth inning when Hebert sent one down the first base line that deflected off Palfrey's glove towards the bullpen for Chase Engelhard to score.

In the eighth, the Lions had runners on first and second base with one out and Kail at the plate. Kail rocketed a line drive right back to Green Wave pitcher Michael Fowler, who then made the easy throw to first to double off Hage and retire the side.

Tulane tacked on two more runs in the eighth to take a 6-3 lead. Just like the fifth inning, the Green Wave didn't record a hit in the inning. Justin Tucker walked three and hit a batter to bring in the first run of the inning. Then Brady Marget grounded out against Jafar Vohra to bring in Tulane's sixth run. Vohra struck out Jackson Linn to strand two runners.

Columbia returns to New York for its home opener on Wednesday against Manhattan. First pitch from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m.
