Baseball Defeats Manhattan In Home Opener, 11-4

Lions win ninth-straight home opener

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball took down Manhattan, 11-4, on Wednesday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Griffin Palfrey and Jack Kail paced the Lions offense with three hits each, while Andy Blake, Hayden Schott, Weston Eberly, Seth Dardar, and Skye Selinsky each recorded a multi-hit game. Jagger Edwards got the start and earned the win, tossing two innings and allowing one run on three hits. Columbia used seven pitchers in the winning effort and recorded 11 strikeouts.

"Coming in, we wanted to get a good amount of guys on the hill," said head coach Brett Boretti. "Jagger did a good job. It was good to see Camron Hubble get out there and JD Ogden be really aggressive."

The Lions move to 7-9 on the season while Manhattan falls to 6-13.

After Manhattan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Columbia answered in the bottom half with two runs. Eberly crushed a double to center field to score Anton Lazits and then Dardar recorded a sacrifice fly to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

Columbia led the rest of the way, opening up a 5-1 lead after scoring three runs in the home third. Eberly scored on a wild pitch while Salinsky and Kail each drove in a run.

"Offensively, to respond right away in the first inning and take the lead back and then throw up a zero and then get another three runs to take the 5-1 lead was great," said Boretti. "We had a good amount of hits. We had opportunities to score more runs and we didn't cash in as much as we'd like to."

The Jaspers added two runs in the fifth inning to make it a 5-3 game, but Columbia answered again a half inning later when Selinsky scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.

The Lions erupted for five runs on six hits in the seventh inning to take an 11-3 advantage and put the game away. Blake socked an RBI double and Schott belted his team-leading fifth home run of the season to make it 9-3. Later in the inning, Jack Cooper came off the bench and got his first hit of the season that drove in Dardar and Eberly.

Columbia opens Ivy League play at home on Friday at 2 p.m. against Brown from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
