Suckow leads pack looking to qualify for NCAA Championships
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- Under the direction of head coach Scott Donie, seven Columbia divers will travel to West Virginia to compete at the 2023 NCAA Zone Diving Championship. Hosted by West Virginia University, the competition will begin tomorrow and run through Wednesday, March 8.
Columbia will compete in Zone A of this year's competition. Live results will be available via divemeets.com. A manual detailing all of the meet information, such as the schedule, media information, scoring, and more, can be found HERE.
Student-athletes representing 32 different schools, with the largest pool being 81 in the women's 1-meter dive, are scheduled to compete at this year's zone diving qualifiers, including every Ivy Institution.
The most accomplished diver in the history of Columbia and the Ivy League, Jonathan Suckow will be making the fourth appearance of his career at the NCAA Zone Diving competition. He is already a three-time qualifier and three-time All-American, and will be looking to secure his fourth qualification which would equal the Columbia record of Jayden Pantel '18CC who was Columbia's first ever four-time qualifier.
Nick Leavell and Macy Pine are also returning zone finalists for the Lions, having both placed top-18 last year. They, along with Suckow, will join four other Lions for a total of seven competing at the event which equals a Columbia record which was set last season. Columbia's full list of competitors is below:
Men:
Jonathan Suckow: 1-meter, 3-meter
Nick Leavell: 1-meter, 3-meter
Casey Fellows: 1-meter, 3-meter
Joseph Nicol: 1-meter, 3-meter
Women:
Alice Diakova: 1-meter, 3-meter
Macy Pine: 3-meter, platform
Chloe Leung: 1-meter, 3-meter
Following the preliminary rounds of each event, the top 18 finishers will compete in finals. Of those 18 athletes, the top-five or top-6 performers (depending on the event) will advance to the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, later this month. Competition will begin at noon each day and continue directly into finals.
For those that advance, NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships will begin on March 24 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
