Baseball Defeats Cornell In Series Opener

Lions offense stays hot in victory

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball defeated Cornell, 12-7, on Saturday in the series opener from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

After tying the program-record with six home runs in a game on Wednesday, Columbia hit five more home runs on Saturday. Griffin Palfrey, Hayden Schott, Seth Dardar, Cole Hage, and Jack Kail all went deep for the Lions. Andy Blake and Anton Lazits each recorded three-hit games. The Lions tallied 14 hits against Cornell, giving them double-digits hits for the third-straight game.

"They're getting good pitches to hit," head coach Brett Boretti said. "We've got an experienced lineup. They know what they're looking for."

On the mound, starting pitcher Andy Leon went six innings, allowing four runs while striking out five. Leon picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season. Will Parkinson finished off the final three innings and earned his second save of the year. Parkinson surrendered three hits and allowed three runs, while striking out four.

"Andy giving us six today was big," Boretti said. "Both of them are doing a really good job, only having to use two arms in the first game. We are getting a lot out of them from a results standpoint with a longer day tomorrow."

Cornell (2-14, 2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Lions came to bat. The Big Red clubbed three hits, including a Sam Kaplan solo home run to take the early lead.

Columbia (11-10, 3-1) then scored five unanswered on three home runs. Schott and Dardar each belted a two-run home run in the home first. Palfrey then hit the Lions' third home run of the day in the second inning to give Columbia a 5-2 advantage.

Joe Hollerbach went deep for the Big Red in the fourth inning to cut Columbia's lead to 5-4. Leon was able to get a strikeout to end the inning and strand two runners after surrendering a single and a walk.

The Lions added a run in the fifth inning on a Dardar sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Blake. In the bottom of the seventh, Cole Hage was called upon off the bench and launched a pinch-hit, three-run home run to give the Lions a 9-4 lead. Columbia scored its 10th run of the day in the same inning when Eberly walked with the bases loaded.

"Cole is getting his way back," Boretti said. "He did a great job in that at-bat against a kid that was throwing a lot of changeups. Hopefully it really gets him rolling."

Cornell didn't go away quietly, scoring two in the eighth off Parkinson when Ryan Porter hit a home run. Kail gave the Lions a cushion in the bottom of the inning by launching Columbia's fifth home run of the day to make it 12-6.

The Lions and Big Red wrap up the three-game set with a doubleheader on Sunday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. First pitch of game one is set for 11:30 a.m.
