Event takes place July 3-9 in Limerick, Ireland
NEW YORK — Columbia archery first-years Sydney Sullenberger and Giselle DeSousa have qualified to represent their respective countries at the 2023 World Archery Youth Championships. Sullenberger will represent Team USA as part of USA Archery. DeSousa qualified to represent Portugal.
"I'm extremely proud of both Sydney and Giselle and thrilled they will get to have this experience," Columbia archery head coach Derek Davis said. "It was impressive to watch Sydney shoot last week in Arizona to qualify. I saw a focus that I haven't seen before. She's always competitive but she had to make up ground in the round robins. She was fierce and determined. Giselle has been a member of the Portuguese National Selection since qualifying for the first time in March of 2021. She hit her minimum scores earlier this spring."

DeSousa, who shoots compound, needed to shoot a minimum qualification score of 660 points to earn her spot to represent Portugal at the event. Her two outdoor tournaments this spring have both met the minimum requirements, as she posted a 674 down in Mexico, as well as a 662 last weekend at the Arizona Cup.
Sullenberger took part in the U.S. Team Trials last week in Arizona and fought her way to qualification. After ranking fourth out of 18 archers in the Compound U21 (Junior) Women's qualifiers, Sullenberger and the top eight advanced to the round robins. The first-year out of Brandon, Florida went 6-1 in the round robins, winning each of her last six matches to climb to third in points and earn the final qualification spot.
The Lions will take aim at the U.S. Collegiate Target Regionals this Saturday and Sunday in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
