Lions earn second in recurve, fourth in compound
NEW YORK — Sophomore Alena Lipscomb earned silver on the national stage to highlight the Columbia archery team's performance at the 57th USA Archery Indoor Nationals. The Lions competed at the Penn Laird, Virginia, regional site, Feb. 28 – March 1. The national results were finalized late last week.
Combining the results from the 15 regional sites, Lipscomb finished second out of 132 archers in the Recurve Collegiate Women's Division. The sophomore from Thailand posted a combined score of 1,146 with her 120 arrows, beating out Texas A&M's Laurel Anderson, who was third with 1,139. Catalina GNoriega (Texas A&M) won the gold with 1,162 points.
Lipscomb's silver medal continues an impressive sophomore campaign that saw her win gold at the season-opening Easton Youth & Collegiate Trophy Tournament. She also won the women's recurve a few weeks ago at the CU Invitational.
"Alena has been a star for us this season," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "To go from not making the travel squad for nationals last season to being the high scorer at indoors this season is extremely impressive."
Lipscomb also teamed up with Columbia club archer Joshua Baek to win the Recurve Mixed Team Division. The duo posted a winning score of 2,316, besting second-place Texas A&M (2,303).
Columbia took silver as a team in the Recurve Collegiate Women's Division, which combined the scores of Lipscomb and senior Lillian Han. Han was 11th nationally in women's recurve with a score of 1,098. Her and Lipscomb's combined score was 2,244.
Columbia's top compound finishers were Sydney Sullenberger and Briana Moore, who took fourth in the Compound Collegiate Women's Team standings with 2,310 points. Sullenberger (1,160) earned an impressive sixth-place finish out of 100 individual archers in the event. Moore (1,150) was 15th.
The Lions finished fifth in the Overall Collegiate Team Championship Points.
Regionally, Lipscomb finished first out of 35 in Penn Laird. Han was fourth, Eunice Choi was fifth, Michelle Ahn was sixth and Mia Shin was 10th, putting five Lions in the top 10. In compound, Sullenberger finished first, Moore was third and Giselle DeSousa was sixth.
Columbia will compete again on Saturday, April 4, in the Ice Breaker Shoot in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
