Baseball Defeats Dartmouth In Game One; Game Two Called Due To Darkness

Game two of the series will resume at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball defeated Dartmouth, 10-2, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader before game two was called due to darkness.

After an hour-long weather delay in game two, Columbia was leading 11-6 but gave up five runs in the top of the ninth and the game was tied at 11. In the bottom of the ninth, the Lions had the bases loaded but failed to capitalize and grounded into a double play to send the game to extra innings.

The game was then called to darkness and will resume at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. The series finale will be played 35 minutes after the completion of game two. The Senior Day ceremony remains scheduled to start at 11:50 a.m.

Between games of Saturday's doubleheader, the 1993 and 2013 Columbia baseball teams were recognized as the program celebrated their 30th and 10th-year reunions, respectively.

Game 1 Recap:

Starting pitcher Andy Leon tossed seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. The sophomore earned his Ivy League-leading sixth win of the season.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the home first with a two-run, two-out single from Anton Lazits that scored Andy Blake and Griffin Palfrey. Columbia added two more runs the next inning later on an infield single by Blake and then Blake came around to score on a passed ball.

Columbia expanded its lead to 6-0 in the third inning when Seth Dardar belted a two-run home run. The Lions opened up a 9-0 advantage in the fourth on a home run by Palfrey and then with two outs Lazits drove in two more runs. The sophomore had a career-high four RBIs through two at bats in the first game of the series.

In the sixth inning, Lazits drove in his fifth run of the game on his fourth hit to make it 10-0 Columbia. Dartmouth scratched two runs across in Leon's final inning of work on a single and wild pitch to make it a 10-2 game in the seventh.

Derek Yoo threw two scoreless innings with a strikeout to close out Columbia's 20th win of the season.

Game 2 Recap (Tied 11-11 through nine innings):

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Skye Selinsky put the Lions in front with a two-run single that scored Lazits and Cole Hage. Two batters later, Palfrey cushioned the lead with a three-run home run to cap a five-run inning as Columbia led 8-4 after seven innings.

Dartmouth added two in the eighth to make it an 8-6 game before Columbia poured three runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 11-6. With a run home in the inning, a downpour and lightning caused an hour delay. When play resumed, Columbia scored twice more after Selinsky and Palfrey drove in runs.

Dartmouth stormed back in the ninth and scored five runs to tie the game. Columbia got the bases loaded but couldn't convert and the game got sent to extra innings and called to darkness.

The Big Green jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two singles and a double. Dartmouth added three more runs in the second to build a 4-0 lead on a pair of fielder's choices and a throwing error at the plate.

Columbia got on the board in the home second as Lazits' career day continued with a two-run home run. In the fourth inning, Hage rocketed a ball down the line that scored Weston Eberly all the way from first to make it 4-3 Dartmouth.

After Columbia's five-spot in the seventh, the Big Green chipped away with two runs off Will Parkinson in the eighth to make it 8-6. Columbia tacked on three runs in the eighth. Lazits drove in his eighth run of the day with a single. Then coming out of the delay, Selinsky singled in Hage to give Columbia a 10-6 lead. Palfrey hit a rocket to left field to score the Lions' 11th of the game.

Starter Joe Sheets went five innings and allowed a season-high 10 hits but scattered four runs and struck out four.
