BASEBALL
The Lions (23-13, 11-4) have won five-straight games and enter this weekend's series tied for first place in the Ivy League with Penn. On Tuesday in an 11-7 win at Army, Columbia set the program single-season home run record after Weston Eberly homered twice to give the Lions 65 long balls for the season. Shortstop Andy Blake has reached base in all 36 games this season. Nationally, Blake ranks No. 19 in doubles (17), No. 42 in hits (62), 10th in hits per game (1.72), 32nd in runs per game (1.31), and 50th in total bases (110). Outfielder Cole Hage is batting .444 over 36 at-bats in conference play this season. His conference-only batting average and on-base percentage lead the league while his slugging percentage ranks fifth.
Columbia ranks 16th in the country in double plays turned per game. The Lions have totaled 34, which ranks best in the Ivy League and 32nd nationally.
Lions starting pitchers Andy Leon and Joe Sheets have made all their starts on the mound this season at the top of Columbia's rotation. Leon is tied for the Ivy League lead with six wins while Sheets ranks fifth in the conference with a 3.42 ERA. Sheets' 1.62 walks allowed per nine innings ranks 30th nationally and second in the Ivy League.
Projected Columbia starting pitchers:
Game 1: RHP Andy Leon (9 APP, 9 GS, 6-1 W/L, 3.70 ERA, 48.2 IP)
Game 2: RHP Joe Sheets (9 APP, 9 GS, 3-2 W/L, 3.42 ERA, 50.0 IP)
Game 3: TBD
SOFTBALL
The Lions hit the road for the final regular season series of the year. Columbia travels to Harvard and will get the series started with a Friday doubleheader due to rain in the forecast this weekend. Columbia enters the weekend 16-19 overall with an 11-7 Ivy League record. The Lions are coming off a sweep of Cornell last weekend that was pivotal in helping secure a spot in the Ivy League Tournament in May. Columbia currently sits in third in the Ivy standings and needs one win or a Dartmouth loss to lock in a spot in the tournament, which features the top four teams. Harvard is 23-14-1 entering the weekend with a 13-5 conference mark. The Crimson currently sit in second place in the Ivy standings.
NO. 20 WOMEN'S ROWING
Columbia women's rowing cracked the national rankings at No. 20 in the Pocock CRCA Coaches Poll, following the week five release Wednesday. The ranking marks the first time the program has achieved a national ranking since 2013. At the Ivy League Invitational on April 16, the 1V8 finished ahead of No. 18 Oregon State and No. 17 USC. In the 3V8, Columbia finished in front of No. 17 USC and No. 16 Rutgers. The Lions compete in the Eastern Sprints on Sunday in Worcester, Massachusetts at Lake Quinsigamond.
