Junior breaks several program records in historic campaign
BATH, Mich. — Columbia's Nathan Han wrapped up his junior season at the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals on Wednesday. He tied for 54th with a three-round total of 7-over-par 220.
"It was definitely a great experience and, more than anything, a huge learning experience," said Han. "I picked up a lot of valuable information and took away what was hindering me from getting to the next level. At the same time, I know I can compete just as well as anybody else here."
Han is the first Lion in program history to qualify for regionals as an individual. He posted rounds of 73-72-75 at Eagle Eye Golf Club, which was playing as a 7,090-yard par 71.
"It's been nine years since we've been in the postseason. Needless to say, it was really great to be back and an honor working with Nathan all week," Director of Golf Rich Mueller said. "The course was tough but if you did everything right you'd have a chance to score. However, the wind was confusing and the rough was high — if you misread any of those things you were scrambling to make par. That made it hard to be offensive, which Nathan is really good at. I'm incredibly proud of the year he had. He deserved the opportunity and I hope he gets another crack at it."
The tournament wrapped up a historic season for Han, who broke program single-season records for scoring average (70.24), scoring average versus par (-0.86), birdies (112) and par or better rounds (21). He also earned eight top-10 and five top-five finishes.
One of the biggest highlights of Han's season came in the fall at the Columbia Autumn Invitational, where the Somers, New York native tied an NCAA record with a round of 11-under-par 60. Han is one of 17 players in NCAA history to ever card a 60 in collegiate competition. Han also won the Georgetown Intercollegiate at Liberty National over the fall with a score of 5-under-par 211.FOLLOW THE LIONS:
