Abby Carpenter Tabbed Field Hockey Assistant Coach

Carpenter arrives at Columbia following playing career at Wake Forest

NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey head coach Katie DeSandis has announced the hiring of Abby Carpenter as an assistant coach.

"I am thrilled to welcome Abby to our Columbia Field Hockey family," DeSandis said. "Abby understands what it takes to be great as evidenced by her career at Wake Forest and by the way she is looking to translate her lessons learned through competing at the top level to her coaching career. Her athlete-centered philosophy, natural leadership, and growth mindset match our program's values and mission to elevate to the top of the League and produce a tradition of greatness. With Abby's ACC and NCAA Tournament experiences, technical expertise, and empathic perspective on staff — she will help us achieve just that."

Carpenter arrives at Morningside Heights following a five-year playing career at Wake Forest in which she appeared in 95 games and tallied six goals and 17 points. Off the field, she was an NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad Selection. Carpenter was a part of the Demon Deacons Final Four team her freshman season in 2018.

"I am honored to be joining the Columbia family and the field hockey program," Carpenter said. "I'm thankful to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing coaching staff and team."

In the midst of her playing career at Wake Forest, Carpenter served as an Athletics Intern to Internal Operations at the school during the summer of 2021. Her duties in this role included assisting the Tutor Coordinator with assignment and evaluation of student-athlete tutors and study coaches to ensure compliance with Wake Forest policies and NCAA regulation, assisting the Eligibility with Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) calculations, as well as, communicating daily for department review.

Carpenter's other coaching experience features stints with the Futures Program, USA Field Hockey (now Nexus) and Wake Forest's Summer Camp in Winston Salem, North Carolina along with Freedom Hky in Odenton, Maryland.
