Katie Wimmer Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week

Columbia’s goalkeeper stopped 18 shots and earned two victories

PRINCETON N.J. — Columbia field hockey goalkeeper Katie Wimmer has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Wimmer made a season-high nine saves in both wins over Monmouth on Saturday and Lafayette on Sunday. In Sunday's 3-2 victory, Wimmer stopped seven Leopards shots in the fourth quarter to protect a one-goal lead and help earn the Lions their second win in as many days. Wimmer also came up big in Saturday's one-goal win, stopping five Monmouth shots in the final 15 minutes of that match to secure the 2-1 victory.

The junior from Windham, N.H. recorded a 2.25 goals against average over the weekend. The Defensive Player of the Week honors are the second of Wimmer's career and the first weekly accolade a Columbia player has earned this season.

The Lions host Cornell on Friday at 6 p.m. and VCU on Sunday at 12 p.m to close out a three-game homestand at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
