STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Columbia cross country program began its 2023 campaign on Saturday morning, with both the men and women competing at the Stony Brook Invite in upstate New York. The men placed second in the competition, while the women took third place, and both teams combined for three top-five finishers.
Jordan Mathis was Columbia's highest finisher, placing third overall in the 4k with a time of 14:11.00.
Mary Caroline Heinen finished four seconds behind her at 14:15.10 to secure fourth place.
Walker Beverly paced the men with a fifth-place finish in the 6k, clocking in at 19:07.10.
Although only placing one member in the top five, the top 15 was filled with Columbia blue.
Owen Lockyer (7th - 19:07.20),
Talha Syed (8th - 19:07.20),
Charlie Siebert (9th - 19:07.30), and
Owen Nelson (10th - 19:09.40) rounded out the top 10, all finishing within two seconds of each other. Lions occupied places 12-15 as well.

The Lions will have two weeks off prior to returning to action at the Iona Meet of Champs on Friday, September 15 in the Bronx.
