Lions fall after holding a lead in the fourth quarter
NEWARK, Del. — Despite scoring twice in the third quarter to take the lead, Columbia field hockey dropped a 4-2 contest at Delaware on Sunday at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the third frame, Columbia (0-2) scored twice on their first two shots on goal in the game. First, Lindsey Yu scored off a penalty corner to tie the game. Anabelle Brodeur and Kennedy Sholeen each got credited with an assist. Just over a minute later, Columbia took a 2-1 lead on Mckenzie Bloom's first career goal.
Delaware (3-1) would score three unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes to earn the win. Roughly two minutes into the fourth quarter, Noelle Sabbagh tapped a goal in from in front to tie the game at 2-2.
The Blue Hens then rattled off two more goals later in the fourth quarter to take a 4-2 advantage and never look back. Kiki Oudshoorn scored her second and third goals of the day to close out the victory. The Lions didn't go away quietly, with Yu firing off two shots on goal in the final minute that couldn't find the back of the net.
Delaware got on the board first. With 13 seconds to go in the opening frame, Oudshoorn netted her first goal of the game. The Blue Hens carried the one-goal lead into the break after a scoreless second quarter where scoring opportunities were minimal. Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer recorded two saves in the first 30 minutes. Columbia registered just five shots in the first half, with none going on goal.
Columbia finished with seven shots (five on goal) while Delaware recorded 12 shots (eight on goal). Wimmer tallied four saves on the day for the Lions. Columbia wraps up its season-opening three-game road trip on Friday at Monmouth. The match is set for 4 p.m. from West Long Branch, N.J.
