The women post 5-0 mark, while the men were 4-1
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Columbia fencing completed its first competition of 2024, combining to go 9-1 at the Penn State Invitational. The Lions' women earned a clean sweep, going 5-0, while the men posted a 4-1 mark.
Tamar Gordon went 11-1 in sabre for the women, and Evelyn Cheng went 9-0 in foil. Justin Haddad led the men in victories with 10 in epee, and Zachary Zusin was 8-1 in foil.
The day started with wins for both squads over Penn. The men took down the Quakers, 20-7, thanks to solid performances out of foil and epee, who each won their weapons by a 7-2 count. The women used an 8-1 mark from foil, highlighted by undefeated rounds by Sofia Gaydos and Cheng, to pick up a 19-8 decision.
In round two, the women took down Temple, 17-10, thanks to 3-0 records from Gordon, Christelle Ko and Janet Chen. The men dominated Haverford, 22-5, after the trio of Haddad, Howard Zhao and Ethan Chin teamed up for an 8-1 record in epee.
The men went down to the wire with the Nittany Lions, and sabre did its part, going 6-3. However, Penn State picked up 5-4 wins in foil and epee, several by just one touch, to eke out a 14-13 decision and hand Columbia its first defeat of the season. The women breezed past the Nittany Lions by a score of 23-4, aided by an unblemished mark in foil from Gaydos, Cheng and Rachael Kim.
Against Yale, the men bounced back with a 16-11 triumph. Zusin was 3-0 against the Bulldogs to help foil post a convincing weapon victory. Women's sabre set the tone against Yale after perfect rounds from Gordon and Chloe Gouhin, and the Lions went on for a 19-8 win.
The Lions closed the day with matching 20-7 wins over North Carolina. Sabre and foil combined to go 16-2 in the men's match, while foil notched a 9-0 round.
Columbia is back in action on Saturday, January 20, for the St. John's Super Cup for five more dual matches. The Lions will take on Penn State, St. John's, Notre Dame, Harvard and Ohio State.
