The men’s and women’s teams combined to go a perfect 10-0 in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. — Columbia fencing won the men's and women's titles at the St. John's Super Cup Saturday after each squad went 5-0 on the day against strong competition. The Lions earned victories over St. John's, Harvard, Ohio State, Penn State and reigning national champions, Notre Dame.
Individually, Skyler Liverant posted a 12-3 record in men's epee to pace the squad. In women's sabre, Chloe Gouhin was 12-1 and Evelyn Cheng was 11-2 in foil.
The Red Storm put up a tough fight in round one against the men, however, sabre and epee victories lifted the Lions to a 15-12 decision. Liverant won all three bouts against St. John's, which was the difference in the match. For the women, Sofia Gaydos and Evelyn Cheng's undefeated marks in foil gave their weapon a 7-2 win and helped Columbia earn a 19-8 victory over the Red Storm.
Both squads came up with identical 16-11 victories over Harvard in the second bouts of the day. Nick Harvey and Bogdan Hamilton's 3-0 marks powered sabre and foil to help the men. The Crimson could only field one in women's sabre to help the Lions sweep that weapon and epee sealed the deal with a 6-3 mark against Harvard.
Men's sabre and foil were dominant, going a combined 16-2 against Ohio State to lift Columbia to a 19-8 victory in round three. Sabre ran through the Buckeyes with a perfect 9-0 mark in the women's competition in a 21-6 decision.
Against Penn State, the men avenged their loss from last weekend with a 19-8 win over the Nittany Lions. Howard Zhao and Skyler Liverant swept through their opponents in an 8-1 epee victory. The Penn State women earned weapon wins in foil in epee, but the trio of Gouhin, Vera Kong and Madison Four-Garcia were perfect in sabre to give Columbia a 15-12 edge in the match.
In the final matchup against the Fighting Irish, first-year Marsel Nagimov's 3-0 mark helped foil earn a 6-3 win, which proved to be the difference in a 15-12 triumph. Victories in foil and epee gave the women enough match points for a 16-11 win to complete the unbeaten day.
Columbia has four more matches on deck Sunday, January 21 at the Philadelphia Invitational. The action begins at 11 a.m. when the men face NJIT and the women take on Temple. Other duals include NYU, Notre Dame and Drew.
