The men’s squad picked up four more victories, while the women went 2-2
PHILADELPHIA — Columbia fencing completed a busy weekend at the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday. The men's squad went 4-0, while the women split four contests on the day. The Lions took on Temple (women only), NJIT (men only), NYU, Notre Dame and Drew.
Jaden Callahan shined for men's sabre, going a perfect 11-0 and saw action in all four matchups. Sofia Gaydos led the women with a 9-0 mark in women's foil.
The day began with the men taking down NJIT handily, 20-7. Binder, Ethan Xiao and Zach Zusin went 8-1 in foil to highlight the opening win. Women's epee earned a 5-4 win against Temple, however, the Owls were strong in foil to gain enough separation as they went on for a 16-11 victory to hand the Lions just their second defeat of the season.
Both teams followed with wins over NYU in round two. The men earned a 15-12 decision after foil went 7-2 and Callahan subbed in sabre to pick up two bout victories to come out on top in sabre. Women's sabre posted a 9-0 mark in a 22-5 triumph over the Violets.
The men picked up its second victory over Notre Dame in as many days after a 14-13 win over the Fighting Irish. Callahan continued his winning ways, going 3-0, and helping the Lions win sabre 7-2 after dropping the foil and epee sections of the bout. On the women's side, a perfect round from Madison Four-Garcia wasn't enough as Notre Dame snuck by Columbia, 15-12.
All three men's weapons excelled in the weekend finale against Drew to pick up an easy 22-5 win. The women used a 9-0 record from sabre and an 8-1 posting from foil to win 23-4 and finish the day on a high-note.
The Lions are back in action next Sunday, January 28 when they make the short trip to Brooklyn for the LIU Shark Showcase. Columbia will compete in four rounds against LIU, CCNY (women only), Hunter (men only), St. John's, Princeton and Yale.
